Muse Workshop #1 (I am using my 2nd workshop because the first one I was supposed to go to was full before the workshop even began)

I went to Alcohol 101 located in the Healh Center Room 208. This workshop was to educate us about alcohol, not to tell us to stop drinking it, but rather inform us and help us with out desicions on alcohol. I did learn a variety of things. Such as "slamming" a drink rather than sipping one leads to more time of recovery and sobering up. Second, the myth about eating something afterward actually does not help sober a person up either. I liked the idea of this workshop and the information given, but the people who ran and gave the presentation did not seem very motivated to do so. I think htey should have been better prepared. They just read off the slides, it appeared as if they did not know what they were talking about. I would recommend the information given but not acutally the workshop itself just because of the presentation delivered.

Music List #4

1) Just Dance - Lady Gaga
I always start to move whenever I hear this song! For me, it is a great feel good song!

2) Far Away - Nickleback
This song makes me cry. I listen to this song whenever I feel the need to cry.

3) Sweet Dreams - Beyonce
For some reason this song makes me think of when I was in Europe. It is a fairly new song and when I first heard it, it just caught my attention right away.

4) Tik Tok - Ke$ha
This song in particular is a little more punk-ish for me. It makes me feel good about myself.

5) Watcha Say - Jason Derulo
I chose this song because I actually listen to the story of the song. I have been in a situation close to the one being told in this song, and I have had the same effects that have been portrayed in the song. I really like to relate to songs.

#1 Song in January of 1991

So as I have been looking around in search of the number one song during the month I was born in, I found a lot of different number ones. A lot of Janet Jackson songs came up. I saw a Mariah Carey song - Emotions. My mom was listening to older stuff just as my dad was too. She listened to Roy Orbison and Elvis Presley. As for my dad, he was still listening to his European music, with maybe a song or two from the US but mainly things from other countries such as France, Italy, Spain, and Poland.

Interview a Senior (2 of them)

The first senior I interviewed was Tiffany Louie. She has been on the SJSU Women's Gymnastics team all four years of her college career. She said that her college experience was not different from what she planned except she expected to live in very dirty and unsanitary dorms, which she ended up not living in. As a Freshman, she came in Undeclared. She changed her major twice here at SJSU. Tiffany went from Undeclared to Kineseology to Health Science. She would like to aid the elderly. The only thing she would like to have had done differently would be recieving better advising on academics. Meaning she wished that her college counselor would have helped her in deciding what she likes and what she should take her first year. As for advice for Freshmen, Tiffany strongly encourages us to meet tons of people and to take classes seriously.
The second senior I interviewed was Jessica Khoshnood. She has also been on the SJSU Women's Gymnastics Team her entire four years of her college experience. Jessica's college experience has not been different from what she had expected. She knew what major she wanted to declare and knew that she was here for gymnastics. She came into Bussiness. Stuck to Accounting throughout her time here at SJSU. As for what she would ahve done differently, Jessica would have gone out and found a variety of friends. She would not have depended on the gymnastics team so much for friendship. The advice that Jessica gave for Freshmen was to have fun, make the best of what you get. learn about yourself, you do not have to party in order to have a good time. And try to break away from your old habits and ways to learn something new.

Non-Muse Event #1

For my first non-muse event, I attended a writing workshop about developing body paragraphs. This was located in the Writing Center ran by Crystle Bruno. I did not feel as if this workshop was very beneficial for me. I thought that the lady was not very prepared with her material and that she did not go into enough detail wabout body paragraphs. Personally, I would not recommend this workshop for people who need help with their writing. However, I did find her handouts that she passed out very useful and informative.

Scholarly Journal Article

Roy Orbison was born in Vernon Texas in 1936. Orbison did not have the good looks like Elvis Presley, or Johnny Cash. Instead he used his singing talents to capture audiences all across the United States. He also captured his audience by his story telling songs of loneliness and longing for love. Orbison became known as the "underdog", the "hopelessly romantic loser" as Richie Unterberger states. His first major hit single was "Ooby Dooby" from whom he signed a record deal with; Sun Records. He signed with Sun Records in 1956. With his second song, "Only the Lonely," Orbison hit the charts in second place, only due to his new label, Monument Records in 1960. With-in a five year period, Orbisonwon Monument Records a whopping 15 singles on the Top 40's chart. Orbison never got into the mainstream, head bopping singer and entertainer. He was a more underground, not an every day kind of singer. He was more of a slow singer, that is what he like to sing. And in 1946, "Oh, Pretty Woman" hit the top charts as #1. He had other tear jerker songs suck as "Crying", "In Dreams", and "Its Over". All of these songs are recognized as orbison's greatest hits and will never be forgotten. Roy Orbison died in 1988.

REVISION: Music Memories #1

I remember listening to Roy Orbison since the age of three. My mom always played "Pretty Woman" in the car. I also remember listening to Elvis Presley and the oldies station. When I began school, I remeber listening to Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, Christina Aguilera, N'sync, and the Spice Girls. If you did not have these artists' CD's or cassettes you were not "cool". I even had their stickers! As time moved on, the "Now" CD's came along, which had all the hit singles from the radio and MTV. I began listening to the radio more, like 101.3, and eventually what is today known as Energy 92.7. My parents would not let me listen to radio stations like Wild 94.9, so that's when I got my first Ipod. Then I began to put music on there that I liked. Soon after that, I did not need the radio as much since I had my Ipod. And this is where I am today. I find new music through Itunes, dance clubs, friends, and even the radio when I am in the car.

REVISION: Music List #2

For me, when it comes to songs about sex or drugs, I do not listen to what the lyrics mean as much as I do the melody and how it makes me feel. Here are five songs that came to mind:

1) A Little Bit of Ecstacy - Josie
When I hear this song, it makes me think of the club Ruby Sky, and when I have went there to dance. It also makes me feel a little sassy. The first time I heard this song was in the car on the radio with my dad.

2) Must be the Ganja - Eminem
I love the way Eminem sings this song. The melody, his tone of voice, and the rhythm. It all goes together so well, and for me it's very catchy! The first time I heard this song was at a recent party.

3) I'm in Miami Bitch, The Bay Edition - LMFAO
Again, this song is very catchy. This first time I heard this song was in a club and it just made me want to dance!

4) Best I Ever Had - Drake
This song reminds me of my friend and I. We used to take long drives around town and we would always play this song blasting it out the car windows.

5) Hotel Room - Pitbull
I believe that I heard this song in a club. I am not quite sure. I like the beat of the song, it is very bobble head like or up and down like.

Music Memories #2

The two people I intervied were my father and mother.

The first person I interviewed was my mother. Growing up, she listened to a lot of Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, Jackson 5, Frank Sinatra, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Martha and the Vendellas, and Aretha Franklin to name a few. As a teenager, the craze was the Beatles. As time went on and she grew up music changed and she did not like the change nor did she take it very well. When the Rolling Stones came out she did not like them one bit. As for concerts, she never attended a big concert. She went to local concerts, or concerts that were hosted by the local college. These concerts were of local artists. As for today, she listens to a lot of gospel music that she can find on the radio. She also listens to the oldies station and bands such as Simply Red. She has also grown a custom to some songs that I even listen to. She hates rap music, hip-hop, and any music affilated with these genres of music.
The Second person I interviewed was my father. My father group up in Poland. The music he listened to was very diverse. In Poland, songs came from artists all across the world. (As well as artists from Poland) As a teenager, my dad listened to Spanish music, Italian music, The Beach Boys, and various Polish music. The music of his time, especially in Europe, was more folk-techno with a bit of pop. I know this personally because growing up, he used to play some of his oldies in the car! In Poland, there were many free concerts. They were in parks, civic centers, and convention halls. (These were the local conerts that brought Polish artists and sometimes bigger more famous artists) My dad grew up in Warsaw, Poland's capital city. So he got all the mainstream attractions, biggest concerts, and what not. My dad to this day still has the cassettes he used to play in the car when I was growing up. When he moved to America, he grew customed to the music that was being played here. He heard it in Poland, but now it was 24/7. Some artists to name are: Cher, The Beach Boys, Los del Rio, and Effiel 65. Now in his 60's my dad listens to techno music on radio stations or station like 98.1 where they play a variety of songs from the 50's all the way to today.
Growing up, I listened to both of my parents music, that is what I grew up on. As time went on, I began to listen to what my friends were listening to and what was "in". Now I really like to listen to techno and club music. I traveled to Poland almost every summer, and I fell in love with Polish music as well as techno, house, and electronic. Going to Poland, helped me discover other kinds of music from different countries that I really enjoy. Many are pop, techno, love, and even telling stories.

Music List #3

Songs I cannot STAND:

1) Your Body us a Wonderland - John Mayor
* I cannot stand this song because first of all I do not like John Mayor. Second his voice in this song and the melody just throw me away from this song.

2) Dirty Pop - N'Sync
* I did not like it the minute I heard it. I am not exactly sure why. Either because it sounded different from their first album or I just did not hear it when all my other friends heard. And because of that I now hate it. Weird reasonings I know.

3) Papa Don't Preach - Kelly Osbourne
* The way Kelly sang this song, to me, sounds as if she is trying to be someone she is not. Kind of like copying someone else's work. So that right that was a thumbs down for me right away. I think this is the main reason why I really cannot stand this song, on top of the fact that I do not really like Kelly Osbourne's work. And even as I am typing this, I now have this song stuck in my head!

4) Invisible - Clay Aiken
* Even though I thought Clay was going to win American Idol, when his CD came out I did not like any of the songs, especially this one. I think part of it had to do with the fact that he was getting a whole lot more lime light than Ruben (the winner of American Idol) himself. Because this song became over played it died out quickly and came onto this list.

5) (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction - Britney Spears
* I think the reason this song is on my cannot stand list is because she is redoing a song that I really like the orginal way. I also cannot stand this song because I think at this time, Britney Spears was trying to become someone she was not and this song tried to represent that. (From the album, "Oop's I Did It Again".
